43% of suicidal people suffer from depression: study

VietNamNet Bridge – 310 cases of suicide and attempted suicide are recorded by Truong Vuong Hospital in HCM City every year, 72 percent female, a report released on Wednesday says.

47 percent have completed junior school and 30 percent have a high school education.

According to the research, 43 percent of the cases to have manifested symptoms of depression. Broken relationships, romances were assessed as being the primary motivation to commit suicide, 62 percent. Poor financial situations were responsible for 15%.

Regarding method, the doctor said 98 percent of the cases took sleeping pills or pesticides. A small percentage of people used hanging or cutting blood vessels.

93% of the attempts happened in the individuals’ own houses and most often on Sundays and Mondays. The time of the attempt was most often between 8 pm and early in the morning, 49 percent; 38 percent occurred in the afternoon.

In 2000, one million people committed suicide in the world, meaning there was one suicide every 40 seconds, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report.

Suicide has become a global concern. The International Association for Suicide Prevention has launched a number of initiatives to help decrease the suicide rate in the world. In 2006, The WHO declared October 9 to be World Suicide Prevention Day.

Many neighbouring countries including China, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines send  updated suicide reports to WHO each year, but not Vietnam, said the doctor.
