Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council has proposed the local administration to impose stricter rules and punishments on polluting businesses in the wake of increasing environmental contamination.

The legislative body also wants the administration to expedite green projects around the city and fix environment-related fees charged to businesses when they register for an investment license.

Surveys by the council have shown pollution is getting worse in the city’s canals, including Thay Cai-An Ha in Cu Chi District and Ba Bup in Hoc Mon District, among others.

The water in the Saigon, Dong Nai and Thi Vai rivers is also contaminated, according to the surveys, impacting the health of locals who depend on these sources for their water.
