Danang port looks towards Greater Mekong Subregion

VietNamNet Bridge - Blessed by nature, Danang port has rapidly emerged as a main artery of not only its home central region but also of the Central Highlands and is looking even further, towards Laos for containers handling.

The volume of container cargo coming through the port in Danang city has steadily increased in recent years, with 2007’s total volume increasing by 43 percent over the amount handled in 2006. Cargo volume over the past 10 months has grown almost 30 percent year-on-year.

The port is now busy handling cargo transported to and from the Central Highlands and southern Laos, following the recent construction of national highway 14B and the north-south Ho Chi Minh Highway that run through Danang city to the Bo Y international border gate in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum on the border with Laos.

Located on a main river mouth that empties into the East Sea along the East-West Economic Corridor that links Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam together, Danang port has benefitted from State investment worth almost 100 million USD, giving a face-lift to its Tien Sa port and upgrading the docks, transforming them into a container port with an annual capacity of 150,000 containers (TEUs).

Danang port has also invested hundreds of billions of VND in the construction of a warehouse with a footprint of 52,000 sq. m. to serve the Tien Sa port, in readiness for regional integration with the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

The port’s managerial board plans to handle 4 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2010, of which containers will make up 120,000 TEUs.

The board has drawn up out a clear roadmap for modernisation, starting with the construction of Son Tra port, where they will build a 400 m-long dock for 10,000 DWT freighters during the 2008-10 period.

Between 2010-2020, the board will call for investment in one additional container port capable of receiving freighters of more than 50,000- tonnes and container ships in excess of 3,000 TEUs.

In addition to the construction of a bonded warehouse and the establishment of a logistics company, Danang port is improving the quality of its services and management to meet UK stringent ISO 9001-2000 quality control standards.
