Vietnamese footballers set off for AFF cup

Vietnam national football team left Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport Tuesday for Phuket, Thailand to attend the 2008 ASEAN Football Federation Cup.

“We will try our best to bring glory to the country,” team captain Duong Vu Lam said. “We are confident we will reach the semis.”

Coach Hendrique Calisto said he believed his players will fare well in Group B play against Laos, Malaysia and host Thailand.

“Vietnamese football fans can believe in us,” he said.

Vietnam is not considered a serious title contender but the players exude confidence entering the competition, which bodes well for the hopes of many fans at home.
