VietNamNet BridgeConstruction on the Cat Linh-Ha Dong urban railway project in Ha Noi will begin in the first quarter of the year, according to the director of the Viet Nam Railway Department under the Ministry of Transport, Vu Xuan Hong.

The trains will run from 5am to 11pm daily and will have the capacity to carry 28,500 passengers per hour one-way.

As one of the seven key urban railway routes scheduled to be built between now and 2020, the Cat Linh-Ha Dong elevated train will be built at a cost of VND9 trillion (US$552 million), with $419 million funded by a loan from the Chinese Government.

Four-carriage trains will travel the 13.5km route with an average speed of 35km per hour and a maximum speed of 80km per hour. The trains will run from 5am to 11pm daily and will have the capacity to carry 28,500 passengers per hour one-way.

The department was currently conducting bidding on seven contracts related to the construction of the project, Hong said, with the largest contract, including design, equipment and installation, worth about VND6.7 trillion ($394 million).

Land clearance remained the leading impediment to progress on the project, Hong said. From Nga Tu So to the Cat Linh depot, about 400 households and many public infrastructure works would have to be removed at a total estimated cost for compensation of VND596 billion ($35 million).

The Ministry of Transport was considering whether to separate the land clearance work from the main project and make the Ha Noi People’s Committee responsible for this work.

“If land clearance is not finished in time, the project will not be completed by the end of 2013 as scheduled,” Hong said.
