Presidential Amnesty to benefit over 15,000 inmates

The short-listed inmates have paid more than 85 billion VND in compensation charges for civil crimes, court charges and court-imposed fines in place of further punishment.
One economic criminal has paid 2.2 billion VND in compensation to cover material losses resulting from his crimes.
Luong Quoc Dung, a former Deputy Director of the Sports and Games Committee, who had served half of his eight-year jail term, imposed for child sexual abuse charges, will also be among the beneficiaries.
It was the third time Dung had pleaded for mercy but until now he has not met the requirements for amnesty.
Addressing the closing session of the Amnesty Consultation Council’s meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, Chairman of the council, said that, since 1990, the Party and State have granted amnesty to more than 95,000 inmates, just six percent of whom have relapsed.
