Authorities crack down on Ha Noi parking violations

March 26, 2009

LookAtVietnam – Drivers who park their vehicles illegally and cause traffic jams will be fined up to VND1 million (US$57), according to the Ha Noi Department of Transport.

Fines for parking violations will range from VND200,000 to VND1 million.

Beginning April 2, police forces would collaborate with transportation department inspectors to evaluate and create order at parking lots in Hoan Kiem District and other key city routes, said Thach Nhu Sy, chief inspector of the department.

Fines for parking violations will range from VND200,000 ($11) to VND1 million, according to the chief inspector.

The investigative teams will measure and restrict parking spaces which currently exceed the allowed size limit. Parking lots guilty of causing traffic jams will be cleared. The number of parking sites in the district will be reduced based on the new criteria.

Also part of the new regulations, car and motorbike lots will be required to repaint their yellow lines white. Parking signs will also be placed at key traffic jams sites.

Six businesses operating car lots have been asked to establish “self management teams” under instruction and support of the police and transport inspectors. These teams will take responsibility to propagate parking rules at their own parking sites as well as penalise parking violations.

Sy also said that three groups were formed to ensure implementation of the new parking rules. A car and a tow-truck would be provided to each group to move vehicles that do not obey regulations. Violators would be required to pay the incurred charges and fees.

Parking regulations and a list of parking fees would be printed for distribution to customers.

The vice chairman of the municipal People’s Committee approved expansion of the plan to all city districts, Sy added.

Ha Noi currently has 124 sites vulnerable to traffic jams because of parking areas.
