Legislators discuss relaxing movie quota laws

March 20, 2009
The National Assembly (NA) Committee for Culture, Education, Teenagers and Children suggested an end to the quota system on importing movies during the NA’s standing committee 18th session Thursday.

The Committee for Culture, Education, Teenagers and Children also recommended canceling an item that requires enterprises to own a movie theater to import films.

NA Deputy Chairman Nguyen Duc Kien said the roles of the two ministries responsible for movies at cinemas, on television and on DVDs – the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Information and Communications – should be clarified.

The draft amendment to the Cinematography Law is scheduled to be discussed during the NA meeting in May.
