There are an estimated 250,000 cars on the capital’s roads, while the number of new vehicles being registered has soared.
Last year, there were around 4,000 cars registered in the capital each month, an increase of 800 a month compared to the previous year.
“In reality, the number will be higher,” said head of the department’s transport management office, Nguyen Minh Tu.
“With more cars on the roads, it is vital to obey traffic regulations,” she said.
Tu added that the majority of traffic violations involved speeding and not obeying traffic signals.
Other common offences include driving unregistered vehicles, carrying too many passengers and drink driving.
Tu added that many road users were unfamiliar with traffic laws. “I admit that these faults are common among drivers. However, work pressure and poor roads are also to blame,” Khanh, a bus driver, said.
Vu Khac My, a driver with a private transport company, said he was often under pressure to carry more passengers than legally allowed.
Tu said that the Ministry of Transport had advised training centres on road safety.
“However, increasing drivers’ sense of responsibility is the best way to make the roads safer,” she said.
