France Telecom bullish on Vietnam’s long-term potential

June 29, 2009

France Telecom views Vietnam as a “very promising market” for new products, services and technologies, Jacques Fulcrant, Country Manager of Orange France Telecom Vietnam said.

“Our priority is to become the strategic partner of a [local] telecom operator,” he told a press briefing in Ho Chi Minh City last week.

Europe’s third-largest telephone company last year said it considered buying stakes in MobiFone, a leading mobile service provider in Vietnam, which plans to launch its initial public offering this year.

Orange France Telecom said they would apply 3G or third generation technology in Vietnam.

The Ministry of Information and Communications licensed four local telecom firms, including MobiFone, to provide 3G services.

The services are expected to be available this November.

Bui Quoc Viet, director of Communications and Public Affairs of Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group, told Thanh Nien Daily that Vietnam is “a promising market for 3G with an estimate of total turnover up to US$10 billion by the end of 2010.”
