Rare breed gayal found in southern sanctuary

LookAtVietnam – Traces of a rare type of gayal were found in Phuoc Binh national garden in Bac Ai district, sourthern Ninh Thuan province, reported conservationists.

“The living place of two herds of around 40 gayals was discovered in the park two years ago”.

Technical officers have conducted field observations in the buffer zone near the nature reserve and found out a gayal that usually visits the hilly farming area cultivated by the locals.

He is a full-grown, brown-haired gayal of around 900 kilograms with white legs, said a technical officer. The distinctive feature of his bent horns is that they have two colours – black at the top and olive-like yellow from the middle to the root.

“The living place of two herds of around 40 gayals was discovered in the park two years ago,” said Nguyen Cong Van, Director of the Phuoc Binh national park.

Officers at Phuoc Binh reserve have started sketching out plans to work with relevant agencies for a joint survey and concrete conservation measures.
