43 percent of business leaders don’t have high-school diploma

August 7, 2009

VietNamNet Bridge – A recent survey of 63,000 businesses nationwide showed that 43.3 percent of business managers do not have a high-school diploma, while only 2.99 percent have master’s degrees.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan said that academic qualifications are a must for businessmen. If businesses do not take a serious look at the issue and initiate timely solutions, they will lag behind others. Many economists say that in the global integration, Vietnamese businesses have shown shortcomings in competition, especially, they lack ‘soft skills’.

According to Khoan, the biggest problem of Vietnamese businesses is a lack of thorough preparation before doing business with foreign partners. They still do not have deep understanding about the world. For example, the world is tending to shift to use clean energy, which is friendly to the environment. If Vietnamese enterprises continue making products that can pollute the environment, they will fall behind.

Pham Chi Lan, a senior economist, noted that Vietnamese businesses do not take initiative in integrating into the world. As businesses have not paid appropriate attention to the issue, they still cannot grasp all opportunities, while they are particularly weak in dealing with challenges.

The survey showed that 51.3 percent of businesses have less than 10 workers, 44 percent of businesses have 10-200 workers, and only 1.43 percent of businesses have 200-300 workers. Regarding capital, 42 percent of businesses have capital of less than 1 billion dong, and only 8.18 percent of businesses have 5-10 billion dong in capital.
