Nam Dinh avoids relegation

August 31, 2009
Nam Dinh football players celebrates their goal against Can Tho, which help them stay with the V-league for the next season.

Nam Dinh Football Club, third last in the V-League, secured the final berth in the next V-League season Sunday by beating First Division’s third best, Can Tho, 1-0 in a play-off at Chi Lang Stadium in Da Nang.

Philip Okoro’s second-half header gave Nam Dinh a hard-fought victory. Can Tho had more scoring chances but strikers William Santos and Das Silva and defender Quoc Trung wasted them all.

It’s the second time Can Tho has lost a play-off for a V-League berth, and shows the Mekong Delta side is prone to buckle against an experienced team.
