A painting by King Ham Nghi (1871-1943) has been sold for 8,800 euros (US$11,729) at an auction in Paris on Wednesday, an official has said.

The auction was held by SVV Million & Associé and around 80 people attended, according to Nguyen Van Phuc, Chief of the Center for Capital Hue Relics Preservation Office of Foreign Affairs.

Phuc said the city of Hue bid 8,000 euros ($10,650) provided by local authorities and sponsored by overseas Vietnamese. However, it failed to secure the painting due to the lack of experience and financial capacity.

Chieu ta (Sunset), an oil on canvas, was painted by the eighth king of Vietnam’s last dynasty while living in exile in Algeria in 1915 .
