Swine flu has hit 224 people in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre over the last week, the provincial Department of Health reported Monday.

The A/H1N1influenza virus mainly attacked schools and residential areas in Giao Thanh District, but so far it is still under control, said Dr. Nguyen Van Thang, vice director of the department.

At an emergency meeting convened Monday, Truong Van Nghia, vice chairman of the Ben Tre People’s Committee, ordered agencies to apply preventive measures across the province.

Earlier this month, national agencies had reported 96 cases of influenza A/H1N1 infections nationwide, including one death, since the beginning of this year.
