A 3D animation film featuring the Vietnam People’s Army’ first commander, General Vo Nguyen Giap (1911-present) has been completed after two years in production.

The 20-minute film, titled Quyet dinh lich su (Historical decision), deals with the legendary general’s actions during the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 against French troops.

On the night of January 25, 1954, Vo Nguyen Giap made the decision to ask his men to withdraw from the battlefield to preserve his forces despite getting the go-ahead for an attack.

The strategic decision played an import part in the famous victory of the Vietnam People’s Army at Dien Bien Phu a few months later.

Quyet dinh lich su, made by animator-director Ha Bac (also the filmmaker of Vietnam’s first 3D cartoon Giac mo cua ech xanh - Green frog’s dream), also features other Vietnamese heroes, including martyrs Be Van Dan, Phan Dinh Giot and To Vinh Dien.

Vo Nguyen Giap was listed among 59 of the world’s greatest military generals in the history of 2,500 years in the book Great Military Leaders and Their Campaigns published in UK in 2008 and in Asian Heroes by Time Asia in 2006.

Bac said the film celebrates the 100th birthday of Vo Nguyen Giap.
