Vietnam’s U23 national team finished second at the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Eximbank Cup after drawing 1-1 with Malaysian rivals in their final round match in Hanoi on Sunday.

The Vietnamese tried their best to win the match against Malaysia in order to win the tournament but the Malaysians stood firm.

Vietnamese fans and players were eager to beat Malaysia and avenge their 0-1 loss to them in the final match at the 25th South East Asian Games in Laos in 2009.

Vietnam started well on Sunday and it looked like they would win after midfielder Trong Hoang found the net midway through the first half after a powerful shot from outside the penalty area.

However, the Malaysian players kept calm and scored a leveler right before the break, Bakhtiar Baddrol doing the job with a free kick.

Vietnam thus had to settle for second place after a 5-0 win over Myanmar, a 1-1 draw with Uzbekistan and the draw with Malaysia.

Uzbekistan won the championship after a draw with Vietnam and two wins over Malaysia and Myanmar.
