The Vietnam Football Federation’s National Coaches Council has decided to sack the German coach of the national team, Falko Goetz following the poor performance at the recent Southeast Asian Games in which Vietnam lost in the semifinal.

Speaking at a meeting in Hanoi Wednesday, council chairman Nguyen Sy Hien said: “Goetz did not know how to choose and use the right footballers, have clear strategic ideas, or adapt, and failed to leave a significant impression on the national team or the national Under-23 team.

“The council members have agreed to remove him as suggested by VFF’s Steering Committee.”

Goetz, who is vacationing with his family in Germany, was to have returned to Vietnam January 4 and have his contract ended prematurely with a severance pay of US$66,000.

However, he has since said on his website, www.falkogoetz.de, that he will not return but instead send a representative to settle the issue.
