Kieu Thi My Dung (L) had facial tumors removed on Friday.
An American surgeon and Vietnamese doctors performed surgery to remove abnormal facial tumors from a 22-year-old girl at Ho Chi Minh City’s Cho Ray Hospital on Friday, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.
The operation on Kieu Thi My Dung started at 10 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m.
Dr. McKay McKinnon, a renowned Chicago-based plastic surgeon, led the surgery team.
Dung, of the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong developed small tumors on her eyelids when she was three months old. The tumors have since grown quickly; they covered nearly half of her face.
Dung also has small tumors on her body, especially on her arms. When the weather changes, she suffers terrible headaches that do not respond to conventional treatment.
Dung has lived with the tumors over the years because her family could not afford medical fees.
On Saturday, Cho Ray Hospital will perform surgery for Thach Thi Sa Ly, a 35-year-old woman who is densely covered with bubble-like lumps.
