Vietnamese student’s iPhone app book published by US firm 

A 22-year-old Vietnamese student has authored a book on how to build better iPhone applications published by a US-based publishing house.

Last November, Vo Duy Khang made his debut as a writer with the book Pro iOS Apps Performance Optimization, published by Apress. 

Written within four months after Khang signed the contract with the publisher, the book was later listed on Amazon and received positive reviews.

“A must read for any serious iOS (Apple’s mobile operating system) developer,” a reader commented on the online retailer’s website. 

For many Vietnamese young people, including  IT experts, Khang’s achievement is a significant one, considering that lots of software engineers and professionals are taking on the challenge of developing “super” applications which will bring them fortune.

However, the young man, who is enrolled for a Masters in Information Technology at the Australia-based Carnegie Mellon University with a full scholarship of US$80,000, said he won the contract unexpectedly. The US publisher made an offer to him after coming across his English blog entries on IT matters. 

“What’s amazing here is not the profits from the book’s sales, but the writing itself. I had never thought that I would write a book until I received the publisher’s offer,” said the student, who has won many prizes during his school years in Vietnam like mathematics contests.

Now, besides studying, Khang is also running a company outsourcing software and developing applications for Apple and Android phones in Australia. The company has customers from all over the world including the US and France.

He said despite difficulties he has learned a lot from the business.

“I hope to develop it into a multinational corporation with software applications used worldwide,” Khang said.
