LookAtVietnam Bridge – The number of students implicated in crimes has become increasingly high. Is it because morality in education has been treated lightly?

| 'Questionable' online game shops are located near universities | Statistics of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) show that the number of student crimes is increasing year after year. From 2003-2007, there were 27 students who committed penal offences, 77 other students were arrested for involvement in other crimes, 126 students were forced to leave universities, and 2,533 students reportedly violated university regulations.
According to Phung Khac Binh, Director of the Department for Students and Pupils Affairs under the Ministry of Education and Training, not only students, but lecturers were also found as committing crimes.
In the past, students were not bold enough to hurt teachers, while teachers did not embarrass students, but these things have become more popular nowadays. This shows that there exist problems in virtue and lifestyle of teachers and students.
Binh said that a moral education and impartment of knowledge must be carried out at the same time. Students must be taught to become useful citizens with good personalities.
Why are students, the intellectual circle of the future, being implicated in crimes? Universities’ material facilities, including dormitories and play grounds, are seriously lacking, while the demand for cultural exchange is increasing among students. As students do not have places for healthy cultural exchange, they go to “questionable” places like game and billiard shops.
In 2002, MOET promulgated regulations on assessing students, which said that students that were irresponsible in regards to civic behaviour would be forced to leave universities.
