Households in Binh Thanh District in HCM City have sunk into the Sai Gon River due to landslides. | Nha Be District is the area at highest risk, along with 19 sites along Kinh, Muong Chuoi, Phuoc Kieng and Phu Xuan rivers, and Giong, Tom, Doi, Ong Lon 2, Cay Kho and Tac Ben Ro canals.
Landslides along rivers and canals during the rainy season this year occurred earlier than previous years, said the HCM City Waterway Authority.
Rains have caused two river landslides in Nha Be District this month, sweeping away hundreds of square metres of land.
Nine riverbank areas along sections of the Sai Gon River and Thanh Da Canal in Binh Thanh District are on the list of areas threatened by severe landslides.
Le Van Ngoc, chairman of the Ward 26 People’s Committee in Binh Thanh District, said all 99 households and six State agencies along the Kinh Bridge-Binh Trieu Bridge section of Thanh Da Canal were affected by landslides and must be moved to prevent landslides.
The city said it could only carry out three landslide prevention projects this year because of budget problems, said the HCM City Waterway Authority.
The projects with the highest priority are at the Kinh Bridge-Binh Trieu Bridge section of Thanh Da Canal, and at sections of the Tom Canal Bridge and Phuoc Long Bridge in Nha Be District.
