Some Vietnamese students at the Transportation University in Chengdu, China | LookAtVietnam Bridge – Many Vietnamese students in China say they still feel the shake of Chengdu’s ground so they have booked air tickets to return home.
At the Transportation University in Chengdu, China, which hosts hundreds of Vietnamese students, many students have left their rooms on the fourth and fifth floors of a luxurious building to live in temporary tents because they are still afraid of quakes.
According to some Vietnamese students, there are around 400 Vietnamese students at the Transportation University in Chengdu and they are all safe following the terrible quake in China on May 12. Since the quake, communication between Chengdu and Vietnam has become very difficult but most Vietnamese students have contacted their families.
Le Chi Hai, a post-graduate student, said Vietnamese students are very puzzled these days. On May 13, Hai received a message from his friend that a chemical factory in the nearby city had exploded and chemicals were polluting water sources there. Notably, Chengdu uses water provided from that city.
After that a large part of Chengdu lost water. The price of water escalated by 10 times. The city now has water again but people are afraid of using tap water, including Vietnamese students.
Another student, Phan Viet Duc, said food prices in Chengdu have soared.
On May 12 and 13, students were moved to tents far from buildings as the local government is afraid of aftershocks.
Most Vietnamese students have returned to their dormitories but they are still frightened because since noon on May 12, ten aftershocks have been recorded. Many students have booked tickets to return to Vietnam.
Duc said in his 50-member group as many as 30 have decided to go home.
